Year 7 statistics comparison

Stem-and-Leaf Compare Drill

Compare two stem-and-leaf data sets using mean and median, then decide which class or group did better on average. The first five questions scaffold the method; the final fifteen expect students to calculate and justify the comparison.

What students are comparing
Decision rule: find the mean and median for both data sets. If higher values are better, the stronger group usually has the higher mean and median. If lower values are better, the stronger group usually has the lower mean and median.

Read

Turn each stem and leaf into a data value using the key.

Mean

Add all values, then divide by how many values there are.

Median

Find the middle value, or average the two middle values for even data sets.

Evaluate

Use mean and median to choose which group did better.
