Transformations

Slide, flip and turn. First recognise the transformation, then draw the image yourself on a coordinate grid.

→

Translation · slide

Move every vertex the same distance and direction. The shape keeps its orientation.

Reflection · flip

Each vertex moves to the other side of a mirror line, the same perpendicular distance away.

↷

Rotation · turn

Turn every vertex around a centre by the same angle. A quarter turn is 90°; a half turn is 180°.

Part 1 · recognise

Which transformation?

Watch eight animations: horizontal, vertical and diagonal translations; clockwise, anticlockwise and half-turn rotations; and reflections in the x-axis and y-axis. Then identify nine mixed diagrams. After each correct answer, watch the blue shape move onto the orange image.

Part 2 · draw the image

Translations

Ten questions. Count squares right, left, up and down.

Reflections

Ten questions. Reflect across a vertical or horizontal mirror line.

Choose the rotation origin

Six questions. On a blank page, choose the vertex nearest the middle. A grid then appears with its origin O (0, 0) at your chosen vertex. That vertex stays fixed when you turn the shape.

For these tasks you may choose the centre. Using a vertex leaves one corner in place; choosing the one nearest the middle helps leave room for the image. If a question gives a centre, use that point.

Rotations · two steps · Part 2

Ten 180° rotations only. First choose the vertex nearest the middle of the blank page. The grid appears with (0, 0) at that vertex. Then draw a half turn: each corner finishes directly opposite the origin, the same distance away. Clockwise and anticlockwise give the same result for 180°.

How to draw

Click the grid intersections for the image’s vertices in order. The shape closes automatically. You can also enter coordinates. Use Undo or Clear to correct a vertex.

Final challenge · two transformations

Multi-transformations

Ten questions. Find two transformations, in order, that take the blue starting shape to the orange final image. Choose the full instructions for each step. After every check, watch your two transformations in motion, then compare your purple result with the orange target. Replay or pause whenever you need.

Test preparation · five original tests

Transformation Practice Tests A–E

Five six-question tests, each worth 25 marks with a suggested time of 55 minutes. Practise vocabulary, identifying transformations, reflections, translation, rotation and two-step moves. Every test uses newly designed shapes. Work online, print a blank test, or view worked solutions.

Answers save separately for each test. There are 23 automatically checked marks plus 2 marks for teacher review of the chosen-rotation explanation.
